WM1A/Z firmware-based mod for ZX300/A

Welcome Midnight v2 (for ZX300)!

Midnight v2 for ZX300/A is now also based on the WM1A/Z firmware, and, similar to recent releases, it brings greatly improved sound quality for this player.

There was an unforeseen issue with the mod, which was fixed. If you managed to install the unfixed Midnight v2 for ZX300 and you have display-related issues, email me please.

WM1A/Z firmware-based mod for NW-A30Series

Midnight v2 (for A30) is also here.

Midnight v2 for A30 is now based on the WM1A/Z firmware, and brings greatly improved sound quality, among with other features, same as with the recent releases for the NW-A50Series and A40Series.

WM1A/Z firmware-based mod for NW-A40Series

Midnight v2 (for A40) is now available.

Midnight v2 for A40 is now based on the WM1A/Z firmware, and brings greatly improved sound quality, among with other features, same as with the recent release for the NW-A50Series.

Update for WM1A and NW-A50Series

Midnight v2 (for 1A) and Midnight v2 (for A50) are now available.

Thanks again to Nayparm at www.npaudio.uk for his generous donation of a WM1A (after having to sell mine, unfortunately).

Why a WM1A-specific Midnight?

This is a new approach for getting the WM1A even closer to the WM1Z sound signature. Now, a WM1A running Midnight v2 (for 1A) will sound the closest ever to a WM1Z running Midnight v2 (with both using the same options in the settings file and the same external tuning).

What's up with the Midnight version for NW-A50Series?

Midnight v2 for A50 is now based on the WM1A/Z firmware, and brings greatly improved sound quality, among with other features.

Next plans are:
- have a mod solely for having the WM1Z sound signature on a WM1A
- WM1A/Z-based mods for ZX300
- WM1A/Z-based mods for A30/A40

Update for Dawn/Midnight v2 for WM1A/Z

Midnight (v2) and Dawn (v2) received an update.

Thanks again to Nayparm at www.npaudio.uk for his generous donation of a WM1A (after having to sell mine, unfortunately).

The StockRevert package now looks for a Dawn settings file in the CFW folder and makes sure that the region set in there is the same as the device region, and it now also reverts the Home page icons color to the default one. You will also see some entries in the boot_log.txt file after the StockRevert package was used.

If a Dawn settings file doesn't exist, it will look for a Midnight settings file. If a Midnight settings file also doesn't exist, there will be no changes to the region.

Also, there is now a "Lower" gain option available in the settings file (besides the "Normal" and "Higher" gain options).

Delete the existing settings file on your player so a new one will be generated.

To install this updated version you'll need to go back to the stock firmware first (sorry, I know it's annoying).

Next plans are:
- working on a WM1A-only Midnight version (hopefully all goes well)
- based on the mention above, have a mod solely for having the WM1Z sound signature on a WM1A

Basically, this would be a new approach to getting the WM1A even closer to the WM1Z sound signature.
Theoretically, the WM1A-only Midnight version should sound more alike to how Midnight sounds on a WM1Z.

In any case, I think Midnight sounds wonderful on the WM1A as it is!

Update for WM1A/WM1Z

Midnight (v2) and Dawn (v2) are now available for the WM1A/WM1Z players

Thanks to Nayparm at www.npaudio.uk for his generous donation of a WM1A (after having to sell mine, unfortunately).

The update brings a settings system (based on a file created automatically in the internal storage) which allows you to change the region, if you'd like to start the Plus mode by default or not, and more!

There is also a new Plus mode available (choose which Plus mode to use in the settings file).

Please read the disclaimer box in the firmware installer, and also open the settings file after installing the firmware, and read all the info in there.

Soon to come there will be a simple firmware to give a WM1A the WM1Z sound, for those interested. Of course, it will only be available for WM1A.

Small update

Hello,

I am still around, but for the time being I can't work on anything else. I have to upgrade my PC, and then set up a VM environment for Ubuntu again, etc.

I've also been going through some slightly bad times, and I had to sell my WM1A. Nayparm at www.npaudio.uk was kind and generous enough to send me another WM1A, and even though it has some noise on the right channel in the balanced mode, it's perfectly usable on the 3.5 port and for firmware testing.

In any case, see you soon!
